Carry-On Allowance: 1 Bag + 1 Personal Item

Each passenger is allowed to carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse or briefcase. Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you and adhere to the following requirements:

  • Maximum Dimensions of Carry-on Luggage: 55 linear inches (length + width + height)

Checked Baggage Allowance

  • For all reservations booked on or after November 12, 2008 for travel on or after December 5: No free checked bags
  • For all reservations booked on or after April 22, 2008: 1 Checked Bag
  • For all reservations booked before April 22, 2008: 2 Checked Bags
  • Maximum Dimensions: 62 linear inches/157 cm (length + width + height)
  • Maximum Weight: 50 lb/23 kg

Excess Baggage Fees

Reservations booked on or after November 12 for travel on or after December 5

  • First Checked Bag: $15
  • Second Checked Bag: $25

Reservations booked on or after August 14

  • First Checked Bag: free
  • Second Checked Bag: $25

Reservations booked between April 22 and August 13

  • First Checked Bag: free
  • Second Checked Bag: $10 online, $20 at airport

Each additional bag: $50

Overweight Baggage Fees

Fee for any bag weighing 51-70 lb: $39

Fee for any bag weighing 70-100 lb: $79

Bags weighing more than 100 lb will not be accepted.

Oversize Baggage Fees

Fee for any bag 62-70 linear inches: $39

Fee for any bag 71-80 in: $79

Bags with overall dimensions that exceed 80 inches will not be accepted.

Sports Equipment

Some checked items, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements. Other sporting equipment items may be checked as one of your bag allowances. Contact AirTran directly if you plan to travel with Sporting Equipment to confirm packing regulations and fees.
