Getting away is always fun and exciting, but when you are on board an aircraft for hours with a hundred or so strangers, chances are high that you may be exposed to a few germs. During cold and flu season, the last thing you want is to pick up influenza or some other virus on your way to your vacation or work trip destination. While airplanes aren’t quite the germ pools some people think they are, there are still some precautions you may wish to take to avoid catching the flu while traveling. Here are some tips to help.

1. Steer Clear of Others

The airport is not the place to try to make friends. Steer clear of those around you as much as possible, because unnecessary interactions with people can increase your exposure to germs. If you can, avoid standing in tight crowds or lines while waiting for your flight.

2. Stock up on the Right Products

Some products can help you ward off germs, and they are pretty easy to come by before you leave. Disinfecting wipes, for example, are one of the best things to get. You can purchase travel sized packs of Clorox disinfecting wipes or medical grade wipes, and then wipe down surfaces like the tray table, which is one of the dirtiest areas on the aircraft, and arm rests where germs may linger. Don’t forget to carry travel-sized bottles of hand sanitizer, which you can take through security, to clean your hands before eating.

 

Facemasks can also be beneficial. They will keep you from contracting any viruses through your nose and mouth. However, remember that the flu can also be contracted through your eyes, so avoid touching your eyes while traveling.

3. Boost Your Immune System

Your body’s natural immunity is by far your best defense against the flu while traveling, so give it the best possible boost before you leave. Airborne immune system support products will deliver an immune-boosting dose of important vitamins. Take these in the days before you travel and on the day of your travel for some extra help.

 

Also remember to stay hydrated, which is hard when you are traveling, as fluid intake has a direct impact on how well your body can fight off any germs it comes in contact with. When you are properly hydrated, your body’s mucous membranes in the nose and mouth are better equipped to filter the air that you breathe, and the dry air of the airplane can dehydrate you faster than normal. Nasal spray can also help keep your membranes moist.

4. Turn on the Overhead Vent

The overhead vent will circulate air around you, helping to protect you from any droplets that are spread when someone nearby coughs or sneezes. If you are sitting next to someone who is infected, this can help keep the germs from landing on you. It will also make you a bit more comfortable while you travel.

5. Pack Your Own Comfort

Finally, bring your own travel-sized pillow and blanket, if you have room. While airline crews try to keep up with the washing of the on-board pillows and blankets, you cannot be certain that they are freshly laundered. Having your own will add another layer of protection.

 

Remember, these precautions are designed to help you stay well, so you can be productive or have the chance to relax once you arrive at your destination. Flu season is no joke, and travel can increase your chances of exposure, but with a few precautions you can give yourself the best chance of staying healthy.
